NZ leader Jacinda Ardern is planning further restrictions to gun ownership upsetting gun owners across New Zealand stating that owning guns is a privilege and not a right.
New laws to be introduced would ban the sale of guns to overseas visitors, create a gun register to track all guns in NZ, gun owners will have to renew their gun licence every 5 years instead of 10 years.
The new laws will also now allow police to check social media accounts to determine whether one should own a gun or not.
The proposed legislation is hoped to be passed by MPs before the end of the year.
The NZ government gun buyback scheme will run until the end of December 2019 for the now outlawed semi-automatics. The NZ government have so far taken and destroyed more than 3,200 guns.
Jacinda Ardern said,
"growing up in a rural farming area, she always understood New Zealanders had a practical need for owning guns. But at the same time I don’t think that extends to this view that every New Zealand citizen has the need and right to generally arm itself”.
Ms Ardern said,
“For instance, there was no plan to arm New Zealand police, who typically patrol without carrying guns”.
Council of Licenced Firearms Owners strongly opposes the idea of a gun register.
The fact will always remain that as stated before in a previous article, is the fact that the New Zealand government may just push hundreds if not thousands of now illegal guns out into the black market.
Don't forget also the fact that the criminals will always be the ones who won't have registered guns - so why even have a register at all?
Ms Ardern is living in La La land if she thinks rammed through legislation will keep everyone safe and making the comment that NZ police typically patrol without guns makes their police and their citizens sitting ducks.
